Of Melancholy by The Rev. Alicia Randolph Rapking

Of Melancholy

And then this morning
It snowed
And in the midst
Of these frozen shards
Of delicate
Stunning
Miraculous creation
The message settles in me as
Frozen upon frozen
Piles up upon the earth

Embrace this season
Of Melancholy
I am told
By the Holy Voice
That lives and loves
Over and under
Through and around
In and out
Of me

Learn what it teaches
These moments
Of Melancholy
See what it shows
Ponder in Silence
Feel what you feel
Through the gray
Through the blurts of colors that have lost their vibrancy
In the name
Of Melancholy

Name the sadness
Name the pain
Name the places
Where beauty has been stolen
By the shadows
In the places
Where people hurt
Where the Earth groans
Where sunlight is hidden
Where moon tears fall
Where disbelief is more
Normal than not

Name the anxious feelings
Name the fear
Name the ugliness that barges in
And pushes away the hope and promise

Name the despair
Name the violence
Name the danger that hides and bursts forth into the open as well

Name the grief
Of those who mourn
The people
The trees
The earth
And listen to their wisdom

In the stillness
Of this unexpected season
Of Melancholy
I have to believe that
I know in my soul that
Beauty is still present
Resting, thriving, hoping in this season
Of Melancholy

I have to believe that
I know in my soul that
Beauty will find me
